Saying Thanks – An Easy Tip for Actors That Changes Everything
This acting tip is so awesome because it can have such a profound effect on the relationships you are building in this industry, and yet it’s so simple! So how are you at saying thanks? For real?
I hate to say it, but I see people miss out on the benefits of this practice all the time and not even know it. Often times as actors we get so focused on what we want and need, we forget about all about the power of saying thank you. You will be amazed at what can start to happen if you can put this into practice. This is something one of my mentors Dallas Travers talks about all the time and I’m so happy to pass it along to you guys.
Of course there are many ways to show your appreciation but here’s the big tip around it: It’s a thank you and that’s it! It can be so tempting to want to sneak a little extra something into your thanks. You might find yourself wanting to ask for another opportunity or to meet up and ask them questions about the business or even just putting your headshot into the envelope…Don’t do it!
Why not?
It’s sneaky. We can all smell when people want stuff from us. Be genuine. What do you really want to thank this person for? Be specific. Did you love that they made you feel super comfortable at an audition? Or maybe a director you just finished doing a play with was amazing so you decide to share your five favorite things about working with them. We all love being thanked. And it goes a long way.
Give it a try. Maybe you can start by challenging yourself to thank one new person every week. And it doesn’t have to be someone in the industry. Go for it. I just know you will start to see and feel a really powerful shift.
Make sure you let me know how it goes!
